Die harte, formstabile Kontaktlinse ist kleiner als der Hornhautdurchmesser und schwimmt auf dem Tränenfilm; sie hat so keine direkte Berührung zur Hornhaut und bewegt sich deshalb bei jedem Wimpernschlag 1-2 mm nach oben und unten. Die Eingewöhnungszeit ist durch die Formstabilität (Fremdkörpergefühl) schwieriger und länger. Die Gefahr des Herausfallens der Kontaktlinsen ist größer als bei weichen Linsen. Sie sind langlebig, hoch sauerstoffdurchlässig und meist recht teuer.
